Northern Tennis Review

About

Northern Tennis Review is an independent editorial publication about understanding tennis. It is for curious spectators, newer players and long-time followers who want the rules, tactics and details of the game explained without assuming specialist knowledge.

The game beyond the score

A score tells part of a tennis match, but not always why a rally develops as it does or what a player is trying to change. We explain game concepts in plain language, define terms when they first matter and connect them to moments readers can recognise on court or on screen.

What we cover

Our coverage centres on rules and scoring, tactical ideas, equipment, court surfaces, formats and tennis traditions. We aim for subjects that remain useful over time, rather than hurried reaction to a result. The publication explains the game; it does not provide personal coaching or equipment testing.

A reader-first approach

We begin with the question a reader might reasonably have, then explain why the answer matters before adding detail. Comparisons show what changes between options, while historical pieces distinguish established context from interpretation. When a subject has exceptions or depends on a particular competition, we make that scope clear.
